The Access Initiative

Opening the Door to Environmental Democracy in Southeast Asia

In 2008, The Access Initiative partners in Indonesia and Thailand established stronger protections for the public’s access rights.

Our Impact

TAI coalitions in Indonesia and Thailand assessed the state of access to information, public participation, and justice in their nation. Gaps in laws, institutions, and practices were identified. The coalitions then engaged their governments in a dialogue and developed campaigns to bring about reforms. In Indonesia this resulted in the enactment of a new Freedom of Information Act. In Thailand this advocacy  played a strong role in ensuring the new constitution enshrined the right of the public to have information about new development projects that affect the environment and to participate in decisions concerning such projects.
